ORIGINAL QUESTION:
Does anyone know what a positive plaster cast mold for a large TLSO body
jacket weighs? I'm interested in what weight range they are before they dry
out. Thanks,Randy McFarland, CPO Fullerton, CA
RESPONSES:
I can't say for sure since I've never actually weighed one, but an
approximately 200# child's mold can require a full 100# sack of plaster
to fill. Plus the water weight.
Never weighed one but boy do I remember they are heavy, especially in the
early 80s when we laminated bivalves (yes, 2 lamos).
I used to do TLSOs by myself and have moved plenty of them. I have done a
few that were too heavy for me to move by myself. I was able to tip them
into a position where I could mold the plastic but then had to break them up
in place. I would estimate that those were around 120 lbs. An average adult
was probably around 80 lbs. Then we got a cad system and the foam models
were about 2 lbs. Much nicer to deal with.
I just weighed one. Its from a 14 year-old girl with scoliosis of average
build (100lbs 5.4 feet tall). The cast weighs 67 lbs. I hope that helps.
