Dear List,
Thanks for the responses to my inquiry. Here is the original post with the responses summarized below.
I am looking for suggestions to aid in doffing a hard-to-take-off skin suction transfemoral socket. The elderly patient has a long residual limb (almost KD) and soft tissue. The socket is not too tight and donning the socket with a pull-in sock (zip-whiz) is no problem. The patient finds it easier to remove the prosthesis if he uses a little cream (Procomfort Gel) during donning but this results in socket slippage and rotation. He finds talcum powder unhelpful.
1-You might try lightly sanding the texture of the socket, works with laminated and flexible liners.
2- If it is a hard socket you might try sanding the inside with a 200 grit or finer sandpaper to break the glass like finish. If it is a flexible socket it usually self resolves as it absorbs some body oil but I have had some luck hurrying it along by wiping the inside with silicone spray. I usually have to repeat it a few times but it seems to solve it after a few weeks.
3-Ossur single seal with hand sanitizer. If needed create a vacuum plug to don whilst sitting, use a modified fish pump to run vacuum.
4-Have you considered a second, more proximal valve in an area of tightness to release local tension?
thank you all for sharing,
