Dear List Members:
I have a patient who exhibits bilateral quad weakness that causes crouch gait and excessive fatigue as he walks with a walker. He has full knee extension ROM and is in physical therapy for strengthening. His therapist is asking if we can provide locking knee orthoses with manual release which will progressively lock as he stands. I'm thinking a Step Lock design fits the bill. But, is there a prefabricated option with Step Locks or similar function? I'm concerned about Medicare coverage for a custom locking knee brace in the absence of an orthopedic condition. Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated.
