I had quite a few responses and about the same amount of people wanting me to post the responses.

Original post:

I have a unilateral bk patient who is starting to play football. Curious to what feet people have had success with. I am thinking about staying away from a running foot, but I am open to nearly anything. Success stories and any other useful information would be awesome.

Thanks!

See responses below:

I have a long time (20 plus years) patient who umpires for high school and some local college football.

Many years ago I set him up on a Springlite gold medal foot. He loved it and has been using it ever since. He is t interested in trying anything else. Otto bock bought out Springlite many years ago and it is still available from Otto Bock

Talk with Greg Davidson @ Davidson prosthetics out of Washington state. He has a modified cheetah that is working very well.

I'd love to hear how this plays out. I have an ultimate player wearing a vari-flex xc E Sent from my iPhone

Fillauer All Sport Foot is what I would recommend. We currently have 3 high schoolers and 1 college kid wearing the All Sport to play football in

We had a lot of success with the Renegade for active young patients. The other one that I used a lot was the TruLife Catalyst.

I have a lacrosse player who is very happy with his Endolite blade foot

I have a very active, rugged high school football player who tried many feet and broke many feet before we fit him with the Wave Sport foot from Fillauer. That has lasted him the longest amount of time and he has given me favorable feedback with regards to the foot and it's performance. In fact, I'm a big fan of the Emotis line - through Fillauer. <URL Redacted>

I would probably use a College Park Venture foot. Three year warranty and very reliable and functional foot. Reasonable cost K-3 foot.

We have just launched a new foot called the Victory. I fitted one to a semi pro football player in West Virginia who has been very pleased with the results. I can send you a short video if you wish, also can put you in touch with him if you want to talk to him firsthand. TRULIFE

My recommendation would be to have your patient perform some of the movements and activities that will be required in football, then find out what that foot doesn't do well for them, and let the functional requirements drive the decision. One advantage we have is the trial period from some of the foot manufacturers. Depending on how serious your patient is about running, you will want to bump up 1 or 2 categories, but there can be a limit with this before the reduction in ground compliance becomes an issue.
