Ignorance, can be defined as a lack of knowledge. It can be used to describe a topic that you did not or even could not have gained knowledge about. Can I ask you a question? Do you know the difference between The Alabama State Licensure Board of Prosthetics and Orthotics and The State Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics?
At our state meetings I have heard so many people say that the meeting is designed to make more money so that more regulations can be placed on us as practitioners. I too shared this view! That the meetings typically focus around one person and his agenda. Many people within our state feel that it is not right to have to attend this meeting much less to have it be mandatory in order to get legal and business CEUs. Many of us feel that this meeting was really more about a select group of people being able to push their agenda in regulating other practitioners. I held this viewpoint as well, and if you know me I do not hide what I feel very well!
I have to say that my viewpoint is changing with every conversation that I have with board members as well as association members. The more that I read legislation on the regulations that will govern our industry in the near future the more I see and understand the battles that lie ahead of us. I am wise enough to understand, as are many of you, that this battle will never be won with one voice. I have reluctantly sent money or participated in meetings with the thought that someone else would solve my problems. Several months ago I decided that the only way that we would change this industry is by locking arms and fighting for its survival. I decided to attend meetings with an open mind, to see who was really fighting for us. I wanted to understand the battle better, I wanted to understand the other people who want to see us survive as an industry. I attended an association meeting yesterday with about 10 other people. The main consensus in the room was that there were not more practitioners involved. The people I met you would know by name, but if you are like me you would not know their actions. There was no malice or contention, there was real discussion of how to move our industry forward.
I know many of you have reached your reading limit so let me close by saying this, if you are not involved in the state association of prosthetics and orthotics I urge you to take a second look! We are facing some of the toughest times as an industry that we ever have. The association members realize that the association needs to be restructured and refocused on representing you in a more professional manner. This fight cannot be fought by 10 people! If you are a person that wants to complain and wants to yell for the point of yelling, please just send your money and attend the yearly meeting, continue to do what you've been doing. If on the other hand, you are a person that would like to debate the value of what we do as practitioners and would like to fight for our industry through intelligent conversation and open debate, please consider joining us at the next association meeting.
Watch for upcoming emails regarding the bylaws of the Association as well as potential opportunities to serve on the board that manages or oversees the association. The opportunities are coming, it's up to you if you accept them!
