Hello all,
I have a 54 yo female, 5'4 170 pounds who has successfully lived with polio throughout her life. In May '13 she slipped and sustained a fall in which she fx her left femur. Following recovery of this injury, in Mar '14 she stumbled over a curb and fx her tib/fib. During her recovery from this injury she subsequently was dx with post polio syndrome.
On her right, less involved side, I note good hip flexors and extensors, good quads and good- dorsiflexors. On the affected left side, she has trace of all these measured movements. Clonus noted when any of these muscle groups is contracted. My assessment was corroborated by her PT.
Between the parallel bars she can ambulate surprisingly well, however fatigues within a few passes. She does not exhibit recurrvatum and does have a flexible genu valgum.
This lady is seeking some orthotic intervention that will provide her stability and gait. I feel that any intervention will act more like an anchor than an aid. Does anyone have any thoughts on what design, if any might help this lady?
