List Members,
I recently was asked to offer a suggestion as to how to secure a motorcycle
rider's foot on a rubber covered peg.
The rider, an iconoclastic fellow who has not owned an automobile for over
three decades in the Northwest, was broadsided on his Harley Davidson V Rod
and became a left transtibial amputee. The rider also has a utility cycle in
the form of a 1960's era BMW with a sidecar. The motorcycle/side car set up
was described as the rider's pick-up.
The facility that asked for the input had fabricated a hand gear
shift/clutch mechanism for the left side of the BMW. The concern was the
rider would not be able to sense his left foot on the rubber peg. I
suggested a footboard with a toe cap. In that manner, the rider could use a
bit of knee extension to secure his foot on the footboard and receive some
proprioceptive feedback via his shank and knee that his foot was indeed
appropriately placed.
Has anyone on the list faced a similar situation?
