Medicare Orthotics and Prosthetics: What You Need to Document to Avoid Denials
Bruce Mac McClellan, CPO, LPO, FISPO, FAAOP; Peter W. Thomas, JD; and Nancey T. Tsai, MD
The American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists and the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) have partnered to help you avoid Medicare denials under the new standards of documentation for prosthetic limb care.
Under the Social Security Act, Medicare Part B provides coverage for orthotic and prosthetic (O&P) services considered reasonable and necessary to diagnose or treat an illness or injury or to improve the functioning of a missing or malformed body member. For prosthetic limb care, a physician prescription and detailed written order are necessary. Traditionally, physicians and prosthetists have worked collaboratively to assess, select, and document the prosthetic needs of patients. Medicare contractors have recently stated in a Dear Physician letter that, It is the physician's record only and not the prosthetist's, that are used to justify medical necessity. This places a premium on accurate physician documentation of O&P care.
This session will take you through an overview of the issues, clinical documentation requirements, and the importance of a collaborative relationship between the prescribing physician and the prosthetist/orthotist.
