Dear Colleagues,

I asked for a discussion of indications for lateral-that is, coronal
plane-control in a spinal orthosis. Here are abbreviated responses in list
form:

* transverse spinous process fracture
* vertebral body compression fracture
* unstable comminuted compression fracture
* muscle imbalance resulting in lateral trunk bending deformity
* conditions where lateral trunk bending results in increased pain
* paralytic conditions requiring stabilization in multiple planes
* almost any pathology that requires more than 3 levels of posterior
instrumented fusion (cancer, infection, osteoporotic fractures, etc.)
* thoracic or lumbar burst fractures
* low-tone spinal instability (i.e. spina bifida)

Thanks, all, for a good discussion.

David
