Reaching out to see what strategies practioners and facilities are considering to survive in the uncertain future of billable OTS codes for orthotic devices. To start we are reaching out to our referral sources to make them aware of the change and the need for good documentation on their part but what really concerns me (other than the yet to be released fee schedule for these new codes) is how to justify coding a device that did require bending, trimming, etc. We all know the doctor is not going to know ahead of time and therefore is not going to be able to document the necessity of bending, trimming, etc. Unfortunately we also know from what has happened on the prosthetic side that CMS is only interested in what is in the ordering physicians documentation and not the orthotist or prosthetist.
