Hello List,

It's been a while. I hope you are all well.

My query for you today regards initial prosthetic patient interaction. I
was hoping to compile a list of ways various practitioners and facilities
initiate this initial interaction with their patients as well as techniques
that have worked well, and mistakes that should be avoided.

As a Prosthetic Resident at the University of Oklahoma, I get an
opportunity to visit with recent amputees immediately after surgery. I try
to structure the conversation as an introduction to some of the new
concepts that they will be encountering, and then follow them, and their
questions where ever they may leave. I leave a copy of the RIC Manual and a
business card to contact us with additional comment or questions in the
future.

Previous exposure to this process, and another facility, was a little
different. In that scenario the facility employed one of our long time
patients to make the initial contact. It was thought that this individual,
being an amputee himself, would be more approachable.

Any information you can offer will be appreciated. I will compile and
re-post the results. Thank you in advance,

Steven Rutledge, LO, Prosthetic Resident
University of Oklahoma
