Original question:
“Does anyone know exactly how many O&Pbusinesses have closed as a direct result of the RAC audits?”
Al Pike, CP(E)
A number of comments but unable toconfirm that one single O&P Business has closed as a direct result of theRAC audits.
If you get answers please share them, this is a critical question. It mightalso be helpful to know how many have sold for the same reasons. Ihave no idea, but I know I left the field as a practitioner partially dueto being laid off from a RAC audit. I should state, though, that the true cause could be up for debate.
I read 18% closed in region B
Devon Bernard and Joe McTernan with AOPA have been trying to collect this information. I can tell you Dayton Artificial Limb Clinic, Inc. in Dayton, OH was forced to close a full time affiliate location as the result of cash flow relative to Medicare reimbursement.
I don't know the exact answer but was toldby an ABC site visitor that he estimated 60% had closed in the past 2 years.
I have heard it's as high as 17% but I can't verify it.
If you could be so kind as to forward the results of your post I would certainly appreciate it! I may miss any posted response. Thanks ahead of time.
ABC and BOC together should do a calling survey together togive us the exact numbers that know of and also told number that sold due tothe audits.
That's a goodquestion. I suspect the answer is not as many as are going to fall in thefuture. From my perspective it is becoming simply not worth the effort andresponsibility of providing costly devices to patients when we are financiallyultimately being hung out to dry. If one was going to destroy a profession, this would be a perfect plan. After 32 years, I don't think I'll see my 35th.Other insurer's are surely going to follow suit making this a fool's game soon. The mood was negative at the aopa conference last week re. the state ofaffairs.I know one that's going out of business. It's mine. After 35 yrs in the field and 20 yrs as an owner. So add one to thelist.
Can you please confirmthat reason is the direct result of the RAC audits.
I will see if I can pull all the numbers interms of claw backs, but it is over $100,000 .Basically I must be on afocused prepayment audit status because virtually every Medicare claim we sendis getting a prepayment audit and we are losing most of the first two levels ofappeals. Medicare is also RAC auditing me to the max allowed and they arealmost exclusively prosthetic claims
