Dear Colleagues,
I have an amputee patient who also suffers from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This is a connective tissue disorder (poor collagen formation) which results in ligamentous instability, fragile skin and in a tendency to develop very severe cystic structures (bursitis) around joints. This woman is a trans-tibial on one side and trans-metatarsal on the other. The challenges affecting prosthetic use are unstable joints which need to be stabilized and, in addition to the usual prosthetic interface pressures, result in a tendency for this extreme bursitis-like reaction. The result is, she has to regularly see her GP to drain the fluid. I am reaching out to see if anyone has worked with a similar case and found a particularly helpful approach, besides the obvious pressure and shear force reduction.
