The O&P field has
lost one of its greats. T
Dear Colleagues,
The O&P field has
lost one of its greats. Today the news was shared that that Ivan
Long, CP(E) has passed. He was 91. For those of you that
sent birthday wishes last year, of which over 100 people did, Carole Harper's
email address is in your address book or system. For those
practitioners that knew Ivan, or know of Ivan, please reach out to her and
share a note or just a story. If you don't have her email address, I
would be more than honored to make sure that she receives your messages.
I'll share this story: I
learned gait analysis in one afternoon with Ivan. Watching videos
and walking in his home was more valuable than all the mandatory classes and
course work I received at school. When I work with a patient or just
randomly watching people walk in an airport, I acknowledge and value his
teaching.
It is with absolute
certainty that I say that Ivan Long's work will be rediscovered in the
future. Perhaps something that can't be recreated or captured will
be his unique talent and skill. We may have microprocessor knees and
bionic ankles but if I had a family member requiring an AK limb, and I could
pick the ideal configuration irrespective of realistic limits, I'd pick an exo
limb with a Mauch SNS made by Ivan Long in 1984.
Today is a sad
day.
