Dear Colleagues,

I see an increasing number of claims or services denied with published
evidence used to substantiate denials. Texas Medicaid recently sent several
references used in denying cranial remolding orthoses as cosmetic and not
medically necessary.

I have also seen reference to academic journals publishing an increasing
number of retractions to published articles that prove to be invalid. I am
not a researcher. I do not have the academic tools to judge validity. Do any
of you have advice for checking the academic validity of references used to
deny our services? Is there a straightforward way to check an article or
other reference to see if it is peer reviewed or if it has been retracted?

Thank you,

David
