Dear List,

I recently met a 25yo male who, as a skateboarder, severely injured his
ankle. Now, 5 years after the injury, he wishes to snowboard. However,
he cannot dorsiflex beyond 15 degrees without considerable pain and has
requested a device to allow full plantarflexion and blocking
dorsiflexion at 15 degrees. He does not present with any comorbidities
and full strength and normal functional ranges of motion.
I believe that I could help this man with an anterior shell AFO with
limited range ankle joints laminated in, but unsure of the forces
involved in the activity (and the strength of material to suit) or how
an AFO would fare within a snowboarding boot. I would also explore the
possibility of a custom-made boot to encorporate his needs.
I wish to ask whether anybody has done or seen anything similar? Or
whether anyone has a comment to make on the prescription?

I look forward to hearing your responses.

Kris van Parreren, CPO.
