I recently fit a pt with BK shrinkers at an inpatient rehab. She is 2 months s/p surgery and is 58 y/o and 6'-0, her current weight is 299, 100 of which was gained during the last year (while she was dealing with a diabetic related ulcer which led to the amputation.) She has been transferred to a different facility and enrolled in their bariatric program. It seems that the doctor and PT will not allow her to be fit with a prosthesis until she looses weight.
I can understand the concept of rewarding her for any weight loss that may occur, but I think the advantages of an early fit outweigh the the benefit of (possible) weight reduction. To me this is a no-brainer (let me know if you disagree!)
My Question: can any of you direct me to studies that indicate the efficacy of early prosthetic fitting?
