The Academy Webinar Series

LIVE WEBINAR TOMORROW
Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 12:00-1:00 PM ET Hip Disarticulation Compliant Force Distribution Interface
 Jay Martin, CP, LP, FAAOP

Learn how to cast, fabricate, and fit this new hip-level socket design. Gain insight on how to minimize point pressures using compliant fabric to distribute forces within various socket designs. Learn how to maximize the anatomical pelvic motion capture within a hip-level socket design. Hear various case study fittings of both hip disarticulation and forequarter levels.

Jay Martin, CP, LP, FAAOP, is a clinical and research prosthetist, inventor, and entrepreneur who specializes in reshaping the future of advanced prosthetics and orthotics. His patented innovative designs have centered on adaptive computer-controlled prosthetics, neural integration strategies, advanced man/machine interface designs, and nanotechnology applications. He has successfully commercially launched and licensed many of his advanced prosthetic designs. His goal is to give back 100 percent functionality to those with limb loss.

As a clinical prosthetics practitioner, he has specialized in fitting challenging upper- and lower-limb clinical cases. Approximately half of his clinical patients sought out his clinical practice from across the country and around the world after trying and failing to successfully use prostheses; many of his patients were unable to be fit with and use conventional prosthetic designs due to various complications. Martin specialized in the design and development of novel interface designs for both upper- and lower-limb prosthetics to accommodate them. He has been instrumental in enabling not only his own clinical patients but countless others through his mentoring and education of professionals in the prosthetics field on how to use his advanced interface fitting techniques.

As an entrepreneur, he has launched and run several successful companies based on his inventions-including what became the largest prosthetics research and development company in the nation-giving him a unique perspective and understanding of the clinical, engineering, and business sides of the prosthetics field.

Martin developed the first real-time controlled autonomous robotic prosthetic ankle of its type. The project used advanced actuation designs, sensor integration, and autonomous control strategies to provide real-time control of the anthropomorphic prosthetic ankle in angle, resistance, and timing according to the ambulated environmental changes in force, speed, and terrain.

He was later invited to play a key role on the historic DARPA Revolutionizing Prosthetics 2009 Program under the direction of Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. His role included the design of a next-generation socket interface for persons with shoulder disarticulation and forequarter level amputations, as well as the development of various limb components. Both his socket interface designs and limb components from that program have since entered the commercial sector, and have found widespread application in the clinical setting.
