Hello Colleagues and Guests,
I was recently given a copy of the Medicare lower limb prosthetic power
point presentation, regarding the Medicare requirements for lower limb
prostheses. I suppose many of you have seen this inasmuch that it is a
Medicare University webinar program. At any rate, you might find it
interesting.

I have not read the presentation yet, but I'll make a prediction anyway.
Unless we are able to convince Medicare that we should be writing the
definitive prescription in consultation with the prescribing physician,
I believe one thing is sure to happen. O&P services within Medicare and
Medicaid will shrink to an unprecedented level, leaving patients without
the necessary O&P services needed to support and improve their
activities and daily lives. I believe physicians will simply opt for
alternative methods of care, due to the outrageous O&P documentation
regulations that are being handed down to physicians and O&P practices
from CMS. Frankly, based upon the regulations already in place, it seems
that this is the government plan anyway. Those who think Obama-care is
going to be a good thing should read the lawsuit recently filed by the
American Hospital Association.
You should soon see a couple of surveys for your patients and physicians
to voluntarily fill out and send to a common location. These surveys
will be an attempt to document the feelings and wishes of those parties
involved with Medicare O&P care. If the results are as we expect them to
be, we will have significant data to support our cause and hopefully
help us get beyond the problems that we are now facing. There are other
plans as well, but all of this takes time and must be handled one step
at a time. But, if Obama-care does not include O&P services, which I
believe will fly in their face if not included, then I suppose this work
will have been for naught.
Let's hope that we can convince them otherwise.
