Is a Rigid Footplate as Effective as an Articulated AFO in Controlling
Idiopathic Toe Walking?
Mark Geil, PhD
Kinsey Herrin, MSPO, CO
Idiopathic Toe Walking (ITW) is a poorly-understood diagnosis of
exclusion in which children typically stand with a normal upright
posture but adopt an equinus pattern during walking. This study
addresses ITW and potential treatments.
Dr. Mark Geil is an associate professor of biomechanics at Georgia State
University in Atlanta. He received a BS in mechanical engineering from
North Carolina State University and a PhD in biomedical engineering from
the Ohio State University. He helped create the world's first
entry-level master's degree program in prosthetics and orthotics at
Georgia Tech, and his research focuses on locomotion disorders. In 2005,
Geil was awarded honorary membership in the American Academy of
Orthotists and Prosthetists, and he currently chairs the Research
Education Committee for the Academy.
Kinsey Herrin, a certified orthotist, is currently a prosthetic resident
at the University of Michigan Orthotics and Prosthetics Center. She
received her bachelor's of science in chemistry from the University of
Georgia and her master's of science in prosthetics and orthotics from
the Georgia Institute of Technology. She completed her orthotics
residency at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. She received the Triangle
Orthopaedic Associates Prize for Excellence in Orthotic and Prosthetic
Resident Research and was a 2012 American Academy of Orthotists and
Prosthetists Thranhardt Award recipient.
Member rate: $30/Nonmember rate: $50.
