Dear List-serve,
I have a gentleman who is 6'4 tall who has a very short transhumeral amputation and has been wearing his existing Dynamic arm with wrist rotator, digital twin hand, and LTi locking shoulder joint. He has had numerous problems with the arm and almost every year the arm has to be sent to Vienna for servicing, which takes too long to get back and hope that I can get a loaner unit. This patient uses the prosthesis everyday/12-16hrs/day. He takes care of all his own yard work (even weedeating) using the prosthesis. He needs a new prosthesis so we are looking into which system is better for his particular needs.
He has worn U2s in the past but didn't like the minimal lift capacity (his forearm is the longest that can be made and he will not allow it to be shorter for cosmesis) or the elbow locking positions. He likes the functions of the DA but the maintenance and lack of loaners (two for the entire US market) makes for a difficult situation. My patient is asking what the difference is between the Dynamic arm and the U3+? Which one is better? I know the Utah can use most myo hands interchangeably. With a wrist rotator and the locking shoulder joint I am limited with the Utah because of harnessing two switching mechanisms whereas the DA doesn't use a switch to control activate wrist function, so using a shoulder joint with the DA is easy and works well.
I like the control set up of the DA (myo switching from elbow to wrist to hand) vs Utah's but I like the customer service better with Utah. Has anyone successfully harnessed a wrist rotator switch and locking shoulder joint to function well with the U3+? I don't need or want simultaneous function just a reliable prosthesis that isn't a nightmare to get repaired.
Thanks in advance,
Rick Stapleton, CPO
