Hello Listers,
This email is for anyone who is using or did use the Typhon system during
their residency. Typhon has only been in place for less than two years,
so most of you can skip to the next OANDP-L emails; I’m sure there are
plenty. For those of you familiar with Typhon, however, I’d appreciate
your help.
Anyone still reading who is unfamiliar with Typhon, this system is a new
addition to the workload for P&O residents. Users input data into a
web-based system in a variety of styles including check boxes, drop down
menus, and sections where users freely input text. This new digital
system, in contrast with NCOPE's previous hand-written record system, lends
itself to data analysis because of the ease with which digital data can be
analyzed by statistics software. If the data collected from Typhon is to
be used in any study, it is worthwhile to determine how accurately
residents are reporting their patient encounters within the system. To
evaluate the accuracy of this data, I would like to conduct an anonymous
survey of past and present Typhon users.
This survey asks about the honesty with which residents report patient
interactions, ie: If they reported each patient they saw, if they saw each
patient they reported, and the honesty with which reports are filled out. If
inaccuracies exist, perhaps suggestions from those parties who left out or
falsified reports can help mold Typhon into a system which is less
conducive to inaccurate reporting; be it the method of input or the
presence of a minimum number of entries per day. For example, residents
may feel pressured or afraid of not checking boxes for things they should
have done but did not. Since using this system is a requirement to
complete their residency, these users may feel that their residency would
be in jeopardy if they answered honestly. This survey aims to provide
useful feedback to NCOPE to aid in the continued improvement of the Typhon
system. It will do so by highlighting Typhon’s strengths and weaknesses in
a way that only an anonymous survey of its users can do.
This survey is a part of my residency research project. Results will be
submitted to NCOPE and, of course, shared with the list. I would
appreciate your completion of this survey for the sake of my project, the
accuracy of any future research the Typhon data is used in, and for the
continued improvement and streamlining of the Typhon for the benefit of
future residents. All submissions are completely anonymous so please
answer honestly.
