Greetings to all, been reading posts for years, finally brave enough to
post a patient myself! Thanks in advance to all readers and those who reply.
I have a very active, very motivated gentlemen, 5'8 165, in great shape.
Pt has been an amputee for forty years, and is on his feet all day long.
Both his residual limbs are short, bony, and without redundant tissue. He's
been set in his ways for legs for years n years, but is quite comfortable
on a day to day basis. In the last 4-5 months, he has been discussing the
possiblity of getting into running legs. We are mid way through the
process, and things are going expetionally well. He has had a few ventures
out into open grass, and is getting great response and feedback.
His AK = IC with flexible brim, ossur locking liner, TK2100 knee, flex run
foot.
His BK = TSB with ossur cushion liner and sleeve with expulsion, flex run
foot.
Here are my questions:
- should/is it 'normal' for the flexrun foot to be a lesser stiffness on
the AK side, as pt reports it feels stiffer than the BK as he ambulates??
- pt wears a joint & thigh lacer system on the R BK, as he is short BK, to
help with unoading and stability. My original thought was to incorporate a
custom KO into the BK, (which i have done before with great success), but
most companies will not guarantee 'unloading' of the residual limb via a
KO. Any thoughts on ideas for an unloading KO built into the BK?
- conversely, if I stick with a joint and lacer, are there ideas or tricks
with materials for reduction of shear on the patients thigh?
I'll post responses, unless asked not to.... thanks again to all.
