Hello all,

Last week I polled the group on a Medicare case in which the patient was measured for a custom OA knee orthosis. The orthosis arrived however when scheduling the patient, it was discovered he had been in a MVA, ultimately landing in a SNF where he was when we got word of his condition. All who responded gave valuable opinions on what we should do relative to billing for this orthosis. I chose not to bill Medicare at that time and wait for the order to fit him either in the SNF or when discharged at his home. Now it appears he will not be discharged from the SNF for the forseeable future. He has a need for the orthosis, however, as I understand the rule, being under 100 days, the SNF is to be billed, not Medicare? Of course the SNF is balking at this. First, am I correct in my opinion that the SNF be billed and if so are there any alternatives for this patient to get the orthosis before departure from the SNF. It appears that the application of this
orthosis probably would be helpful in his timely departure from the facility.  Thanks for your opinions, they are very helpful
