Hello All,
I have a 6 year old, diplegic CP patient. Has been wearing hinged AFO's for
some time. He is getting tighter heelcords and hamstrings, and is flexing
at the knees more, going up on toes in the AFO's that stop PF at 90 deg.
Therapist wants to try to force his knees back further with shoe
modifications. She has played with posting on the plantar surface of the
shoes, but wants to get extreme.
She would like me to manufacture something to extend the distal tip of his
shoe surface further forward to get his ground reaction force anterior to
knee and force knee extension. I have never fabricated anything like
this...I have some ideas, but wanted to check here for quick and easy
solutions.
To be honest, I think this child would do best using the Elaine Owen bracing
theories, but this therapist is adamant that we push the knees into
extension.
Any thoughts?
Thank you,
Derek Kozar M.Sc., C.O.(c)
