Hello Listserv,
We have a 67 yr old female (non-diabetic) who contracted meningitis and
underwent b/l transradial and b/l transtibial amputations in June. Right TR
is short, left TR is mid. Both right and left TT level are mid bordering on
short. The patient has been in and out of the hospital and rehab center due
to other complications over the last couple of weeks and now is recovering
well. She is eating well and is gaining strength. The doctors have just
removed the stitches and she is now ready for prosthetic intervention. She
is currently wearing b/l BK stump shrinkers. She still has an open sore on
her right arm.
This patient understands her situation and is eager to get moving. She
has an incredible support group: daughters, brothers, and husband. When she
gets out of the rehab center she will be living with her husband who is
capable in helping her with her prosthetic care. This is our first quad
amputee case and would love to get input from anybody who has experience
with quad amputees. We would like ANY input on how to approach this case,
whether it be with starting with upper or lower, myoelectrics/body powered,
component selection(both upper and lower), fabrication tips, maybe
stubbies?...the works. Any advice/tips/experience would be greatly
appreciated by the entire health-care team that is treating her.
Thank you in advance, I will post all responses unless specified not to.
