Good afternoon,
For many years we have used Answer 2 shoes for children that require
Afo's and had not had a problem. Recently we fit a young child with new
afo's (child has a severe latex allergy). When one of our practitioners
was about to apply a new pair of pink and white Answer 2 shoes on the
patient, the mother asked to see the shoes. The mother felt the shoe,
smelled it, and claimed that the shoe had latex in it. It has been my
experience that parents are often correct when it comes to the safety of
their child.
We called SPS, who immediately called APIS. The first time SPS was
informed yes; the shoes had latex. The second time I called SPS to
verify what our department assistant was told, and again SPS immediately
called APIS. APIS stated they were not sure whether there was latex in
the shoes. The third time, I again called SPS, and another rep. called
APIS immediately, and we were told: No there was no latex used by APIS.
Today I called APIS directly and was told APIS does not use latex,
but they could not be sure whether there was latex in some of the
materials they purchase to fabricate certain sections of the shoes.
I asked for a statement in writing to indicate there was no latex in
these children shoes and my request was denied.
Do you know of any other extra depth children shoes that do not
contain latex? Although rare, we cannot risk using a product that
might have latex because of anaphylactic shock associated with a latex
allergy.
Sincerely,
Ed Skewes CPO
