I have had several friends in the Orthotic and Prosthetic family ask me for
an update on my animal rescue adventures.
In early December, the ASPCA confiscated 118 horses in Arkansas where they
were in a very cruel living environment. 114 survived and the ASPCA called
and asked Sumter Disaster Animal Response Team for support in February as
they were running out of warm bodies to care for them. 3 volunteers,
including me, stayed there a week and did everything you could imagine to
help. They also had a foot of snow and it was below 0 a couple of days.
BRRRRR
A week later, after riding my trike all day in the Florida sun with Linda, I
was called upon to drive overnight to Ohio and assist with the relocation of
349 BIG dogs from a so called No Kill Shelter to a temporary shelter. This
was one of the worst I've seen in a long time.
Yesterday, at the Florida State Agricultural Response Team Biannual meeting,
I was given an award for Non Governmental Organization, in front of a room
full of other rescuers. They give 4 awards every two years for outstanding
Federal partners, State employees, County Employees, and Not-For- Profits.
It was quite an honor to be recognized.
In 2010, Sumter DART team members, drove 155,000 miles and rescued 5600
animals, including being the main transportation contractor for the BP Oil
Spill. We transported birds, turtles, and any wildlife to rehabbers all
along the southern coasts. What an honor that was to be chosen to handle to
job.
We will continue to rescue as many helpless and unfortunate animals as we
possibly can. To everyone who supports our endeavors, thank you very much.
To all others, thank you for taking the time to read this and for allowing
an Old Dog to write about his adventures.
