ORIGINAL QUESTION

Have you had the occasion to provide and invoice for upper extremity
compression sleeve and glove for lymphedema? What can you tell me about S
codes? Thanks, Randy McFarland, CPO, Fullerton, CA

RESPONSES- thanks to those who did!

With the difficulties we experienced with billing and reimbursement for all
types of compression garments we felt it in our best interest to discontinue
these services.

Relating to S codes; The S codes are used by the Blue Cross/Blue Shield
Association (BCBSA) and the Health Insurance Association of American (HIAA)
to report drugs, services, and supplies for which there are no national
codes but for which codes are needed by the private sector to implement
policies, programs, or claims processing. They are for the purpose of
meeting the particular needs of the private sector. These codes are also
used by the Medicaid program but are not payable by Medicare. They are
referred to as temporary national codes.

I believe only certain insurances, like BC/BS recognize them at this point.
So I recommend getting prior authorization first, or at least find out if
they accept the S codes.

s codes usually required by BCBS we use A codes for others Are u aware of a
bill in the House HR4662 This bill if passed would require Medicare to pay
for garments Medicar currently pays for Lymphatic drainage therapy but not
garments We are sure if Medicare provides so many other insurances will do
the same go to thomas.gov and put in the bill # this will give the bill in
detail We need all the signatures we can get on this I plan on going back to
DC in May to lobby for this bill We also need state mandates on this issue
