I am assisting a surgeon and an implant manufacturer in providing an
osseointegrated above-knee prosthesis. The patient cannot tolerate soft
tissue weight bearing. We have come up against a barrier; the Rotasafe
torque limiter that connects the implant to the knee is not going to be
covered by Medicare, the patient cannot afford it and the hospital nor the
implant company can afford it. The cost is around $6000. We are looking
for funding and but would also entertain using some other torque limiting
device if there is such a thing. It must release at loads less than those
that would fracture the femur if the patient were to fall or otherwise incur
high axial torque loads. I can get you info on those loads if needed.
