Below is a listing for a DIY limb on EBAY. When I questioned this person
about who would be liable when it breaks, this is the response I received.
My ebay user name is prslegmaker.

Dear prslegmaker,
This is not a question related to the listing.
If you are an amputee, go
where ever you feel comfortable having work done for yourself and do not
worry about others who have a cheaper way here with this.
No liability
attaches for self made items.
Before there was a prosthetic industry
amputees were taking care of their own needs, and there is nothing and no
law which prohibits them from doing so now.
If you knew anything about
prosthetic accreditation, you would know it is largely two legged people
preying on the misery of amputees and billing grandly for things that OFTEN
DO NOT WORK as promised, and which are sold as cleverly marketed insurance
billing scams for them.
An amputee can cast themselves, and often a good used part is better than no
part at all if one has no insurance and nowhere else to turn.
If you understood law, you would know the prosthetic devices the FDA
regulates are internal prosthetic items as in surgical items.
In most states a prostheticist is not required to be accredited to operate
as a prostheticist and only six states have licensing programs.
If a person works on their own car, they are at fault for any result - it is
simple
The items in the kit are exactly what a prostheticist uses, because this is
what I do, AND I am an amputee who hears stories from lots of people who
have no insurance and no way to regain mobility, and need an option to get
it done themselves because they have no other way.
So who are you - some two legged prostheticist who feels threatened or just
some jack-butt who has no compassion for someone who might really need
something like this for hope and a way back to a mobile life?
Since you have not bought this item, you do not know what is really included
as help and how it is done and you will not know - because I have BLOCKED
you from buying anything from me.
This item is
offered to HELP people, and you obviously need help of a different kind I am
not willing offer.
Stick it where the sun does not shine
