WASHINGTON, DC-October 28, 2010-The American Academy of Orthotists and
Prosthetists (AAOP) has updated the O&P Licensure Toolkit on its website
(O&P Licensure Toolkit)
< <URL Redacted>
e&id=217f3a7007&e=l4RRilRh44> . The O&P Licensure Toolkit is a
comprehensive guide that provides a blueprint for state O&P licensure
initiatives.
The Academy endorses state licensure of orthotists and prosthetists as
the preferred method of establishing patient protection mechanisms
through legislated state standards equivalent to those developed by the
National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education and recognized
by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
The updated Toolkit includes the results of a survey of its members in
states with O&P licensure. This survey was designed to solicit
information about licensure and its effects on O&P practice. A follow-up
survey was sent to those individuals who were identified in the first
survey as having played a role in the implementation of licensure within
their state.
The Licensure Toolkit site includes a list of individuals who have
volunteered to serve as licensure resources. These individuals were
involved in the licensure process in their state and have agreed to
share their experiences with others who may have a question about O&P
licensure and the process for securing it.
The Academy appreciates the work of the Licensure Toolkit Committee for
their continuing efforts on this project. On the Committee are Robb
Brown Jr., CPO (chair), Bruce Mac McClellan, CPO, LPO, FISPO, and
Kimber Nation (staff liaison).
