Over 30 years ago my sister Mary had a transfemoral amputation due to
cancer, and walked in her first above knee prosthesis. It was a crude
preparatory prosthesis, yet I was amazed to see her use this artificial
leg to walk.
This personal experience motivated me with a desire to enter this
profession and help others. The advances in technology in the field of
Prosthetics and Orthotics are often a result of chemical and mechanical
engineers (unsung heroes). Computer technology has also had a
remarkable impact upon our field.
