William J. (Bill) Brunner passed away on March 29, 2010 in Houston Texas. Bill
practiced prosthetics for 57 years and worked for Muilenburg Prosthetics in
Houston for 47 of those years before retiring in 2003.

Bill was a World War II vet and became an amputee himself in 1945 while
trying to rescue a fellow shipmate that had fallen overboard while off the
coast of Iwo Jima. It wasn’t until 1992, almost 48 years after his
accident, that Bill was awarded the Purple Heart for his war-related injury.

According to his wife Celeste, Bill was the first person to receive a
prosthetic education under the G. I. Bill of Rights. Bill was ABC Certified
in 1952 and continued his education at UCLA where he was instructed by Al
Muilenburg CPO. At the conclusion of the coarse he was the only student to
have a perfect score which brought him immediate recognition. Soon after
Bill left his position in New Orleans and came to work with Al Muilenburg in
Houston.

Bill’s expertise as a prosthetist and craftsman were truly unmatched. Hundreds
of children and adults have benefitted from Bill’s half-century of work in
the prosthetic field and he will be greatly missed.
