RESEARCH SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR PROJECT IN CHICAGO, IL
Project: Relationship Between Hip Muscle Strength and Standing Balance
Ability in Persons with Unilateral Transtibial Amputations.

Inclusion Criteria
. Looking for persons with unilateral transtibial amputation due to
peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and/or diabetes.
. Each participant must be between the ages of 50 and 75 and under 300
lbs.
. Each participant must report using their prosthesis for at least 20
hours per week for at least one year.
Exclusion Criteria
. Participants with other co-morbidities cannot be included in this
study.
. Participants whose amputation was due to a traumatic event, but later
developed PVD are also excluded from this study.
What does the study involve?
The study involves a single test session (approx. 3 hours) at the
Northwestern University Physical Therapy Department, located at 645 N.
Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611 and at Chicago Dizziness and
Hearing, located at 645 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 410, Chicago, IL 60611 and
subjects are provided $30 for participating. The four Physical Therapy
graduate students involved in this project will measure the subject's
standing balance, hip muscle strength, sensation and administer a balance
confidence scale.
