Attention Primary Care Managers (PCMs) - Change to Beneficiary Enrollment
A recent directive from the Department of Defense (DoD) will affect TRICARE Prime beneficiaries who are currently assigned to military treatment facilities (MTFs) and reside beyond 30 minutes driving time, but less than 100 miles from the MTF. These beneficiaries have recently received a letter from TriWest informing them that they need to sign a drive-time waiver to remain enrolled in TRICARE Prime at the MTF. Beneficiaries have until October 1, 2009 to sign and submit their waiver.
The MTF Commander (or local designee) may approve waivers for those who reside less than 100 miles to the MTF. Only the TRICARE Regional Office-West (TRO-W) may approve waiver requests from beneficiaries who desire to enroll to the MTF and reside more than 100 miles from an MTF, but only if the MTF Commander agrees to accept the enrollment request based on the MTF's capacity and capability.
Those beneficiaries who do not sign the drive-time waiver may elect to enroll to a civilian primary care manager (PCM) or change to TRICARE Standard for coverage.
As a result of
this change, you may see an increase in TRICARE Prime beneficiaries requesting you as their PCM. TriWest estimates that about 6,000 beneficiaries in the West Region will be reassigned from the MTF to the civilian PCM network as a result of this change. Existing beneficiaries assigned to civilian PCMs will not be affected.
For Alaska beneficiaries, the beneficiary either needs to sign the drive time waiver and receive approval to be seen by the MTF or needs to disenroll from Prime and change to TRICARE Standard for coverage.
