Since I have posted my last rescue adventures, Sumter Disaster Animal
Response Team, Inc. has been called into service a couple of times.
A large number of you have requested further updates so we will continue to
let you know of our experiences.
We were requested to help transport 232 Bunny Rabbits from Detroit to Kanab
Utah. These rabbits were part of a rescue done several years ago and the
Sanctuary in Michigan just was not working out for the bunnies. Best Friends
out of Utah was in charge of them and decided to get them to Utah to live
out their lives in beautiful surroundings. We took our custom built rig up
to Detroit, spent the day loading bunnies and then the fun began. I drove
those rabbits 1848 miles with a grand total of two hours sleep. I arrived in
Kanab Utah and a team of rabbit handlers met me to unload our trailer. After
a good night’s sleep, I had to drive 2200 miles home. While on the way, I
stopped and picked up two King Charles Cavalier dogs in Arkansas and
transported them to Florida for a rescue. What’s a 200 mile detour when I’ve
already driven 5400 miles. The whole event was completed in 8 days total
with one day sitting in Michigan while they loaded the Bunnies.
Just before the bunny rescue, I was involved in taking down two dog fighters
in Alabama and transported 46 Pit Bulls away from a living nightmare, never
to have to fight again. To my knowledge, one of the fighters is going away
for a long time and the other one can never own animals again.
Our latest adventure was another puppy mill rescue from Missouri to Long
Island. We loaded 150 rescued doggies from puppy mills in Missouri on Sunday
morning, leaving there at 11:30 am EST. I stopped in Columbus Ohio where the
local volunteers and shelter employees met us and cleaned the kennels,
watered and fed the critters and I was off again. 3 hours worth of stopping
and I still arrived in Port Washington, New York by 10 am the next morning.
A 1200 mile run in 22 ½ total hours. I had 3 ladies in the rig for the trip.
I think only one will return for that kind of trip again. I’m pretty sure
the other two will fly next time.
I do these trips because the animals need the help. I do this as a volunteer
and we have built a not-for-profit team in the process. I want to tell all
of my friends how much it means for all of you to write to us and ask us to
continue our efforts. It truly means a lot. Thank you for supporting
Prosthetics Research Specialists, Inc., as owning this company has given me
the ability to do this. Linda and I are truly blessed. Our employees have
enabled me to go out and tend to the animals. Without our folks here, I
would not have this freedom. Without our fine customers, I would not have a
company and I would not be able to rescue as many animals as we do. Without
the efforts of many volunteers, there would be no Sumter DART, Inc. Thanks
to Daniel Hickey, my production manager and Sumter DART volunteer, who keeps
our equipment ready for me to respond as fast as I do. Thank you to Paul
Prusakowski for allowing me to post these adventures on the list server.
If you can, please check out our website below.
Thank you so much,
Ronnie Graves
