Hello
I have a young Patient with peroneus paralysis and mild to moderat
drop-fot that would like to start running again. Does anyone know of
Running AFO's on the marked or have experience on this field??

Regards Maria B-P, CPO (Denmark)

We have people running marathons in ToeOFF

Good Afternoon Maria,

In response to your question there is a device from Centri called the
Dynamic Walk orthosis. This device is an 'off the shelf' model that works
extremely well for the patient to run in. I have used them on patients from
13-60 years of age with excellent results. I am attaching their website link
and a link to you tube showing a young patient fitting, for your review.

Good Luck!!

SO he needs a strong PLS, shouldn't be any big deal. If he's a big kid and
needs something real durable I would suggest going with a laminated
composite PLS with Kevlar and Fiberglass placed such that you will have the
flexibility you need and plenty of strength. You don't want any carbon in
this which would make it rigid, not strong. There's a difference.

I believe that a Blue Rocker design Toe off may be a very good option for
you patient. I have a patient Whom I fitted with the Blue Rocker Toe off and
he is very active and plays tennis with it.

Hello

You might try a Dictus since there is no spasticity. ( it is low profile,
can be worn with running shoes will allow PF and give a DF assist) Vivian CO

Our athletic patients really like the Step-Smart brace.

Consider a carbon fiber posterior spring leaf AFO. The carbon fiber can be
laid up to allow energy store and return. You may have to play with the
layup to get it to be just right. Keep the posterior strut flat (not curved
around the achilles area which gives it greater strength) so it can flex and
extend uniformly which will store and return the energy.

Maria, I have used the Ossur light AFO for running as the carbon strut is
posterior. The people that I have used it on were not overly heavy and were
recreational runners. Hopefully this helps.

Hello Maria,

Yes, we have enabled many people the ability to run for over a decade.

Have you tried one of the carbon toe off type afos? Or just a regular
hinged with tamarak joints. He won't get push off, but would be able to run
on it.

Check out DynamicBracingSolutions.com Kevin

Allard, Inc. makes the Toe-off AFO and it has been used in many races and
even some marathons!
 Try it.

*Hi Maria- I have had a case that I used tamarack dorsi-flex assist joints
with 3/16 polypro and left it open range. The joints encourage dorsiflexion
and with the open range, the patient can plantarflex through the running
cycle. This set up has worked well. Best of luck!*

Try toe off from Allard or camp

Maybe the toe off matrix max by true life

I'd definitely look into Bleurocker distributed here by Allard USA. It's
made in Sweden though. I think, it was, originally, made by Truelife. Nope,
it's Camp Scandinavia.

I use the 1/8 of inch ser lion. After casting the patient for AFO and ready
after Modifications ,I turn oven to 325 to 350 degree cook the plastic sheet
,then vacuum the plastic sheet to the cast .I use the custom made AFO made
from ser lion for sport players who like to play sport.

Hi,
I had spinal fusion surgery 5 years ago and was beginning to experience foot
drop prior to the corrective surgeries. After the surgery my peroneal nerve
was completely paralyzed and I have not regained the ability to lift my
foot. I was a marathoner before my back problems and looked for 2 years to
find something that would return me to running. I am happy to report that
after trying numerous AFO's on the market I found a brace, the ToeOFF by
Allard USA, that has allowed me to run as well as I did before my surgeries
and subsequent complete foot drop. I will be running the Boston Marathon in
3 weeks wearing their brace. You can see my story on their website,
www.allardusa.com and in addition I would be happy to provide any further
details you may wish to know. I heartily recommend contacting Allard
directly for the details regarding how to fit and customize the brace for
your patient.
Sincerely,
