Subject: Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel
Hello All,
We have a 240lb. patient needing a KAFO, due to excessive knee
hyperextension. She is post-CVA, with otherwise good knee control. We are
going to use non-locking Becker 1008 Posterior Offset Free Motion knee
joints, in one of the adult A sizes. Given the size of the patient, we
will, no doubt, use the largest profile available.
Our question is: What is the weight limit on aluminum vs. stainless steel?
Becker is no longer willing to weigh in on this decision. They now have a
liability disclaimer at the bottom of their joint selection catalog page
that reads, Discretion in choosing a joint size and designing an
appropriate orthosis should be used by the orthotist in all cases. Customer
service would not give an opinion beyond that statement either.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Warren R Mays, CPO
