Original Post:
I am working with a young man who has enjoyed kite surfing, but recently
experienced a work-related accident with left trans metacarpal amputation of
rays 2 - 5, thumb intact. He is now recovering, and interested in resuming
his sport.
Any suggestions regarding best type or design of adaptive devices for this
man to continue safe use of his kite and harness apparatus?

Try Action Life Gloves in Newbury Park, CA., 800-634-4351. They make gloves
for several different types of activities which might help.
Check out TRS. This is Bob Radocy's company and they have a great selection of adaptive terminal devices. Even if they don't have exactly what you are looking for they or you can modify the terminal device. Good luck.
There is a device sold for windsurfers that is essentially a hook that
straps onto the wrist to ease hand use. It hooks over the boom. It might
help in this case. It is low tech though. It is advertised in windsurfing
magazine, I don't remember the name of it.
Good Luck
My name is Larry Lerman and I am VP of Lerman & Son O&P in Beverly Hills, CA. I have been around the sport of kite surfing for more than 5 years and have the good fortune of befriending a former Doctor named Traig Trumbo that started the kite surfing craze in Malibu. He is considered one of the best authorities in the sport. HIs suggestions were the following:
It sounds like this fellow should be able to return to the sport as we even have parapalegic kiters going these days. The proper equipment is key here to avoid the overfly and constant input problems that all lei kites posses. You know where this line of thinking is going. I would put him on the new PL synergy and then see if a mild very open hook type brace on his wrist could be used on that side of his body to give a when necessary grip for the bar while allowing imediate release in case of emergency.
Dr. Trumbo can be reached at his website <Email Address Redacted>
