Thank you List Serve in advance. I have referred to my office a patient with the diagnosis of Rickets Disease. I have looked online and see that the usual orthotic device recommended for these patients is a Bowleg type orthosis worn at night. She is 10 years old, 102#'s and definite tibial bowing with at least 30 degrees of varus bilaterally. She is taking a calcium supplement along with other prescriptions for pain in her knees. My question is, does this type of orthosis assist in relieving pain in the knee and if so, does the medial side bar with thigh cuffs, calf cuff, free ankle attached to shoes, including a varus correcting knee pad provide the best means of addressing this disease.
