Thanks for all these responses. Interesting the diversity of what is
going on and various opinions from our industry. The vendor compliance
is being done to ALL VENDORS - not just O&P. It includes big hitters
like Owens-Minor, Siemens, Medtronics, etc.

This is looking like it is non-negotiable and since this is the largest
provider of healthcare in our area, there is not much room for any
negotiation or discussion. I was more interested in what you are all
experiencing and it sounds like many of you are experiencing this in
it's many permutations.
There is good reasons for this - and most hospitals HAVE to do this to
be compliant w/ JCAHO and federal regs. Most of the hospitals are
outsourcing the agent who will be holding our information and who we
will pay. The company used in this Pittsburgh system only has a few
employees. They have admirably gotten themselves a nice niche - saw an
opportunity, provided a needed service, made it cost effective and got
the bid.

So this is yet another reason for US in o and p to figure out how to
rise up to all these challenges and find opportunities in the changes!!

COMMENTS RECV about fees to be paid to an outside credential screening
company for a large hospital system:

In the past I've had to become allied health staff at several hospitals.
It surprises me that there are not tighter regulations in more
hospitals. Most of us traipse in and out of hospitals, delivering care,
having access to private HC info, with no oversight or regulation. In
many cases un-licensed people are providing O&P care to patients in
hospitals - I can't imagine that the hospital would permit that with any
other discipline. The process is a paper-work hassle and some expense is
incurred, but I don't think requiring some level of credentialing is out
of line.

2 of the Hospitals in Fresno, CA are charging about $250 per individual
per year to be on their appoved vendor list

I manage the O&P department and services for a 1100+ bed hospital and
and have gone through these same requirements.
You're correct. Background checks, compliance manuals, ID and safety
requirements... more rules and regulations than you can possibly think
of!!!!
It is called Vendor Compliance.

Once again we are considered a vendor, and lumped in with the rest of
the hospital suppliers.

This all stemmed from abuse by medical vendors/suppliers, pharmaceutical
companies etc...approaching physicians, administration, staff, with
gifts, or inappropriate influence for referrals and business. It is

This new Quality-Control arena can now selectively prevent anyone from
entering a hospital if your name is in their non-allowed database.

Located in the trauma section of our hospital, and after meetings
educating them we are clinicians providing patient care and not vendors,
they re-classified us and relaxed the rules on us as practitioners.

If this is a potential problem interfering with your daily operation,
abide by their compliance request and pay the fee they want. At last
count, there were over 2600 vendors at our hospital that had to pay
these fees. A nice bit extra revenue generated for the hospital isn't
it?

Present them with literature, explaining our O&P background and
education, and that we are NOT vendors but a patient care clinicians.
This may help the situation and avoid some of the day to day pratfalls
you may encounter.

Hoped this may have helped
