Dear List,
I am looking for a Heavy Duty cosmetic stocking for AK/BK prosthesis. When
I was strictly an Orthotist (not thinking I would be in Prosthetics now)I
had seen a Prosthetists use a tube style stockinette which had too be sewn
at the toes and taped at the top but I am not sure what it was? Even
thought it lacked some cosmetic appeal, it was heavy duty. I have a
gentleman who keeps getting snags and runs in his cosmetic stockings and
this upsets him. I told him to dab his fingernail polish remover on them,
but they are too far gone:-).
Replies:
I believe Otto Bock (or any other distributor) has a caucasian color nyglass
stockinette. Could be cut to lenght and then sewed. Nyglass is very durable.
Unfortunately it does not come in dark brown.
You're probably going to laugh at me, but if he washes the cosmetic hose,
rinses them off and puts them in the freezer for 24 hours, pull them out and
let them dry. This will make them much tougher than they are from the
supplier.
Of course our skin sleeves won't run like nylons either and they are
cosmetic also.
It sounds like you are describing Perlon Flesh tone of course. You may
also try from Comfort products in PA. They have a tubular stocking called
Multi-size that I think comes in flesh tone. Hope this helps.
Sew some up yourself from spandex material, available at most fabric stores
in different patterns and colors. Use a serger sewing machine, with the
fabric inside out. Should last a lot longer than common nylon prosthetic
hose.
I feel that it was probably Compresso-grip shrinker material which comes in
tan. I am not sure. It has ribbed lines in it but it is very tough.
