I just wanted to pass this along to everyone on the list. I saw a TV commercial a couple weeks ago about this new power tool, called a Multimaster by Fein. I generally don't watch commercials like that, and never buy anything that I see on TV this way. But, this looked different, and they were showing people using this tool for work at home, cutting wood trim, removing grout, etc. It is an oscillating saw, just like a cast saw. I wrote the number down and also the website that they showed on TV.
When I had a free moment, I went to the website to check it out and look at it. The price of the tool is about $400, and comes with a huge assortment of blades and attachments. I went ahead and ordered one to check it out, and see how it works and if it is good, or just a piece of junk (there is a money back guarantee, so if it was junk I was going to ship it back).
I got this tool a couple days ago, and have been using it ALL the time now. It works just like a cast saw, and comes with a couple blades like cast saw blades, and I have been using it to cut off plastic check sockets, and also cutting off the carbon laminated sockets, and everything. I have been needing a new cast saw for several months, and just hate to spend that amount of money for another cast saw (somewhere about $1200 and up), so I bought the pneumatic saw a few months ago. That saw works ok, but it is really noisey and then is even MORE noisy when the air compressor has to keep on running when using that saw, and it is not that strong on top of that.
This new Multimaster saw is much quieter than the Stryker saw, and seems to be a lot more powerful as well. It works JUST like a Stryker, and also comes with an attachment to hook up a shop-vac to it and collect the dust (especially handy when cutting carbon sockets).
Just for the record, I am NOT a sales rep for this tool, and have nothing to gain from any sales of this item. But, I just really feel like this is a really GREAT option to have and use in the labs and fabrication of O&P items. It is just a fraction of the cost of the Strykers, and the blades seem more durable than typical blades that we buy, and they are also a LOT cheaper than the typical blades that I have bought over the past few years for O&P work.
I still have the real cast saw to use if I have to cut a cast off a patient, or if I have to go to a hospital or nursing home. The real cast saws are grounded and have the special plug on them to make them legal to use in a hospital or whatever. But, for working in the back room, the real cast saw is just a very expensive tool to use when there are other less expensive and more durable saws out there.
Again, I just wanted to pass this along.
You can find them online by searching for Fein tools, or the Multimaster tool by Fein. It is NOT a cheap gimic or anything, but is really a great tool.
I hope this might help some of you out there to find a good alternative for cast saws.
