Dear List,
I am a 6'0 bilateral transtibial amputee since 2003, with good upper and lower strength interested in purchasing a regular recumbent tricycle. I would like your expert advice on this since these are very expensive bikes.
I am able to ride a regular bike; however, I spent more time worrying about falling, crashing, or causing an accident than actually enjoying the ride. I would like to ENJOY a ride while improving my cardio-vascular fitness.
It seems to me that a recumbent tricycle would be a better choice for an amputee than a hand cycle since, in my opinion, a regular recumbent tricycle would help me preserve or even improve bone density more effectively than a hand cycle ever will because I would be using my leg muscles instead of my arms.
I have seen amputees riding regular bicycles and hand cycles. However, I have not seen a amputee riding a regular recumbent tricycle yet. Therefore, I would like to know if there are any contraindications that I should be concern about when riding a recumbent tricycle since all the amputees that I know use a hand cycle.
Thank you for your assistance.
Nelson
