Dear Sir
Hello CPO's around the world!
The ICRC polypropylene technology
Since its inception in 1979, the ICRC's Physical Rehabilitation Programme
has promoted the use of technology that is appropriate to the specific
contexts in which the organization operates, i.e., countries affected by war
and low - income or developing countries.
Personally I worked since 1990 with this technology in Kenia / Eritrea /
Georgien etc. There are also The ICRC's Manufacturing Guidlines are
designed to provide the information necessary for production of high-
quality assistive devices.
The question will be what's happen or witch technology you will give after
this one to patients and in the country you will work. I focus this problem
in Rumania where is now in the EU market - with the ICRC technology it gives
sometimes wrong pictures to the ministry of health...
P&O service is frequently not seen as a priority by decision-makers at the
country or the international level. Due to the multitude of demands for
services every government faces, the needs of persons with disabilities are
often not prioritized. As a result, P&O and other rehabilitation services
are frequently not taken into account in local budgets. Moreover, disability
And rehabilitation services must also compete for attention of those who
fund international aid.
In the war in Bosnia in 1995 I used in all (5) workshops German Otto Bock
technology. Example - The ICRC AK Legs (only Mono-centric knee) with a
German Quadrilateral socket (PP) made was for my point of view not enough
quality fitting for my patients.
In the end of the chain is always the patient so you have to decide with
technology you will use.. Primitive (National Hospital Sri Lanka)/simplified
appropriate / normal / or sophisticated or Highly sophisticated ... at least
you should give a partner in a programme of project a chance to decide there
future.

Betreff: [OANDP-L] Need simple low cost AK design for a third world
country
Hello list members,
A physician friend in a local Rotary Club has asked me to determine what
exists regarding a simple-to-fabricate low cost trans-femoral prosthesis
with a low maintenance knee joint and a SACH type foot. The existing lab
that would manufacture the prostheses is currently able to vacuum form
trans-tibial prostheses with copolymer. He realizes that additional
equipment like a transfer jig will be needed for AKs.
If you are aware of information about a system that could be
inexpensively fabricated/assembled in a third world country, or if you
have any ideas, please forward the information to me. I'll be checking
with a clinic in Sri Lanka we're aware of.
Thank you!
Thanks,
Randy McFarland, CPO
