The article, it's statements and conclusions do not have any merit. The
numbers simply do not add up. 95mil was paid for 89000 limbs??? That's $1000
per limb - duh... 600mil billed for 300000 limbs - again - $2000 per
prosthesis. The author apparently attempted to write about a subject he had
no idea about and decided to insult the reader with lack of home work
suggesting that the majority of amputations are war/injury related. I am not
implying that he made up the fact of fraud, however my educated guess would
be that this huge number of limbs is in reality the total number of
procedure codes billed. Therefore if we use on average 15 L-codes per
prosthesis, the number of limbs will drop from 89000 to 6000 and this is
over 5 years. The per annum number will be then about 1200, good for 12
average size O&P shops.
