Thank you to all who responded to my query on the grommet lifespan.
The solutions to a rotting black cable grommet varied. Some said to try
the hardware dept at Lowe's or Home Depot, which I did. I couldn't find
anything that would fill the need except for very thin and flimsy 'O'
rings. They did have the exact grommet that I get from my supplier which
is called a 'cabinet grommet'. I also received responses that said to
use a piece of 3/8 inch surgical tubing or clear cable housing cover,
which I may try when my patient returns for a follow up.
Several clinicians said to coat the grommet in Vaseline and bake it in a
180 degree oven until the goo absorbs into the rubber. This I did and
the Vaseline did absorb into the rubber. This procedure will at least
double the lifespan of the little devils, according to informed sources.
The bullet-proof grommets are now in the field and they are undergoing a
rigorous test in the backwoods.
I appreciate your input and sharing.
