If you have a moment, please look at the following website and offer your
opinions of some sort of spinal orthosis to help a gentleman with
neuromuscular degeneration. He has flexor muscles of the neck but does not
have extensor muscles. He has severe kyphosis.
His primary goal is to be able to look ahead (right now he stares at his
feet without the ability to raise his head look forward). He can be
corrected into a functional position, but the kyphosis is resistant. Pictures
are located at: www.atlantapo.com/temppics.htm
Pt is an 83 year old male, 5'5, 120#. The neuromuscular degeneration has
been progressive, with sudden onset of the lack of extensor control in his
neck in the past 6 weeks. Pictures on the website show his ROM. Extension
is limited due to tight flexor muscles and persistent kyphosis. Pt has
normal hand control, can stand & walk, and has a wife who can help him
don/doff the orthosis.
Pt did try on an Aspen CO, Miami J CTO and Minerva CTO in the office. The
CO was not sufficient to extend his head due to the thoracic kyphosis. The
CTO's were not able to contour to his residual kyphosis. The pt does not
like pressure under his chin; he would prefer a forehead extension force.
If you have any suggestions or know of a similar case, please email
