As a provider of pediatric orthotic services, I am asked by several referral
sources to provide the Benik and Mckie splints for these neurologically
involved children. L-coding for these devices is a very gray area. In some
cases I get reimbursed less then what I pay for the device. These same
children are usually getting a AFO device, which I may or may not have
provided. While some say it's this or that L code, others feel an unlisted
code is best. Unfortunately, unlisted means unpaid and these are items being
requested a lot. I'd like to know what others are doing in this area.
